Let me tell you something – Fortnite has completely changed the game when it comes to personal expression, and Sidekicks are the latest proof of that. As someone who’s been playing since Chapter 1, I’ve seen Epic Games evolve from simple cosmetics to full-blown companion systems that make every match feel uniquely yours. These adorable little followers aren’t just cosmetic fluff; they’re personality statements that trail behind you, making your presence known (well, at least to yourself) across the island.
Sidekicks are essentially your personal companions in Fortnite. They’ll follow you around during matches, adding that extra bit of personality to your gameplay experience. Here’s the thing though – they’re purely cosmetic. Enemies can’t see them, so you don’t have to worry about revealing your position. While they won’t help you win fights or give you any gameplay advantages, they definitely make your matches feel more lively and entertaining.
The first Sidekick was Peels, a dog version of our beloved banana character Peely. You could get him through the Chapter 6 Mini Season 2 Battle Pass back in November 2025. After that, Epic Games started adding more Sidekicks to the Item Shop, and honestly? I couldn’t be more excited about collecting them all.
There’s something incredibly satisfying about having a little companion follow you around the island. For me, it started with Peels – there’s just something hilarious about having a dog version of Peely trotting behind you while you’re building like crazy or trying to survive the storm. These little guys add personality to every match, and honestly, they make those long looting sessions feel less lonely.
What I really appreciate is how Epic Games designed them to be completely non-intrusive from a competitive standpoint. You get all the personality without any of the competitive disadvantages. It’s pure fun, and in a game that can sometimes feel super serious and competitive, that’s exactly what we need.

Note: We’ll keep updating this guide whenever new Sidekicks drop in the game!
This is where things get really interesting. Before you purchase a Sidekick, there are some crucial things you need to understand. The most important rule? You only get one chance to customize each Sidekick after you obtain it. So choose wisely!
Here’s my step-by-step guide to customizing your Sidekick:
Pro tip: If you really love a particular Sidekick and want multiple versions with different appearances, you can buy the same Sidekick multiple times. Each copy can have its own unique look.
Here’s some good news – while you only get one shot at customization, you can rename your Sidekick whenever you want. Just open your Locker, select the Sidekick you want to rename, click on the three dots icon to bring up additional options, then select Rename from the menu.
I personally love this feature because sometimes I’ll name my Sidekick based on my mood or whatever funny thing happened in my last match.
Epic Games has been consistently adding new Sidekicks to the rotation. Just like Kicks and Jam Tracks, Sidekicks will keep showing up in the Item Shop. Epic will probably add them to future Battle Passes too, so you’ll have plenty of chances to collect different ones over time.
The most recent additions include some fantastic crossover characters like SpongeBob SquarePants and Groot, which shows that Epic isn’t afraid to bring in popular franchises to the Sidekick system.
After spending way too much time (and V-Bucks) collecting these companions, here are my top tips:
A: No! Sidekicks are purely cosmetic and only visible to you. This makes them perfect for competitive play since they won’t give away your position.
A: Not at all. They’re purely visual companions that don’t impact your gameplay or give any advantages.
A: Currently, you can only equip one Sidekick at a time.
A: Most Sidekicks rotate through the Item Shop, but some might be limited-time or seasonal releases.
A: Yes! You can gift Sidekicks from the Item Shop just like other cosmetics.
Honestly, Sidekicks have become one of my favorite features in modern Fortnite. They add that perfect touch of personality without affecting competitive gameplay, and the customization system lets you really make them your own. Whether you’re a collector like me or just want to add some flair to your matches, there’s a Sidekick out there for everyone.
